Important information about your PC® Pet insurance Policy

FAQ Sign In

PC® insurance has made the decision to sell its PC® pet insurance portfolio to Pets Plus Us® a division of PTZ Insurance Services Ltd. underwritten by Northbridge General Insurance Corporation. This change does not impact PC® home and auto insurance, or PC Financial® Mastercard® products.

All pet insurance policies will be transferred to Pets Plus Us upon the policy renewal date, starting January 1, 2018 – a communication notice will be sent in advance of customer renewal date providing additional information on the transition. Policy holders will experience little to no impact. Individual plans, coverage, along with reimbursement limits will stay the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’m a PC® pet insurance customer. Can I still change my policy or add a new pet?

As a current customer, nothing changes until your policy renewal date. Until then, please contact 1-877-PCF-PETS (723-7387) for support.

  • Is there anything I need to do?

The things you love about your PC® pet insurance product, your plan, what your plan covers, and the payout limits, will stay the same. Additionally, your billing date and payment information will stay the same, unless you request a change. Pets Plus Us accepts monthly premium payments only. If you are currently paying your pet insurance premiums annually, you will be automatically switched to monthly billing.

  • Does this change impact any other PC® insurance or PC Financial® products?

No, this change does not impact PC® home and auto insurance, or PC Financial® Mastercard® products.

  • What if I have to make a claim?

Until your policy renews and is transferred to Pets Plus Us, nothing changes. Existing claims will be managed by PC insurance until resolved. If you have questions, PC insurance is available at 1-877-PCF-PETS (723-7387). Pets Plus Us will take care of any claims that occur after your renewal date. Visit https://www.petsplusus.com/renewals or contact 1-800-700-3391

  • Will I lose access to my PC pet insurance portal?

All PC® pet insurance customers will have access to the portal until December 31, 2018. Until this date, customers are able to download copies of payment receipts or claim letters for their records. You can sign in here.

  • Will I continue to earn PC points?

As of January 1, 2018, you will no longer earn 2X the regular PC® points when you pay your pet insurance using your President’s Choice Financial® Mastercard®. If you currently pay your pet insurance on your PC Financial® Mastercard®, you will receive one year of PC® points (based on your monthly premium as of your renewal date). This will appear in your PC® points account by December 31, 2017.

  • How To:

  • Coverage
    Your plan

All PC® pet insurance plans reimburse up to 80% of covered veterinary costs minus any applicable deductible.

Your monthly premium is based on two factors:

    • The breed of your pet –all breeds are covered but some are prone to certain illnesses so it may cost more to insure them.
    • The area you live – Veterinary costs differ from place to place.

    For recently insured pets:

    • Accident coverage begins 48 hours from the time of purchase
    • Illness coverage, if applicable, begins 14 days from the time of purchase

    • If you need to cut a trip or holiday short because your pet has suffered a covered illness (Ultra, Choice and Value plans only) or accident (all plans), this insurance will cover up to $1,000 of your cancelled travel and accommodation expenses.
    • If your pet becomes sick or hurt while travelling with you anywhere in Canada and the continental U.S., you're covered for the emergency veterinary treatment according to the plan you've chosen.
    • If your pet goes missing, you'll get up to $300 for advertising and reward costs.

      • medication, nursing and prescription food
      • dentistry as a result of an accident
      • professional fees
      • specialist referral, medical devices and approved alternative therapies prescribed or performed by a licensed veterinarian
    Pre-existing conditions

If your pet suffers from a condition before you begin your insurance policy, coverage on this illness or injury could be limited or excluded altogether. That's why it's best to insure your pet from an early age before they develop any conditions you'll want covered.

    or visit: https://www.petsplusus.com/contact-us

Download and print a claim form to take to your vet's office.

    Other forms you may need:

Step 2: Talk to your vet

Discuss the diagnosis with your veterinarian and decide on the best treatment for your pet.

    Step 3: Pay the bill

Pay the veterinary bill in full and hold onto your receipt.

Step 4: Have your vet sign off

Ask your vet to fill out their portion of the claim form and make sure you fill out the rest. You both must sign the form.

    Step 5: Submit the form

You can submit your claim form and receipts by mail, fax, or email.

    BY MAIL
Make a photocopy of your receipts for your records, attach the original receipt(s) to the claim form and mail it to the following address:

    Western Financial Insurance Company
    Attn: Claims Dept.
    300-600 Empress Street,
    Winnipeg, MB
    R3G OR5

    BY Fax
Your claim form can be faxed to 1 866‑501‑5580 along with the original itemized receipt(s).

    BY EMAIL
Your claim form along with the original itemized receipts can be emailed to claims@westernfic.com; when emailing attachments, please send PDF or JPG formats.

    Processing your claim

Your claim should be processed in an average of five business days from when the insurance company receives all the necessary documents. Once completed, a cheque will be mailed to you for the amount of any covered claim. If you have updated your Customer Portal preferences to receive claim payment via bank account, your claims reimbursements can be direct deposited into your account – no more waiting for your cheque in the mail!

    Calculating your claim

You will receive the total amount of your claim for covered costs minus co-insurance and your deductible.

    Co-Insurance
You're responsible for 20% of the cost of your claim plus the applicable deductible. You will be reimbursed for the rest.

    Your deductible
This predetermined amount depends on the age of your pet and is set when you first sign up for your policy. Keep these factors in mind:

    • If your pet has an accident and you're covered by the accident plan, you pay the deductible for each claim made.
    • If your pet has an illness (and your plan covers the illness), you pay the deductible only once a year. Even if your pet falls ill again with the same illness within the same year, you pay no additional deductible.

As an example, here's how a claim would be calculated for a pet less than five years old:

    For each accident claim
    Covered treatment cost $1,500
    Co-insurance (you pay 20%) - $300
    SUBTOTAL $1,200
    Deductible - $100
    TOTAL REFUND $1,100

For the first illness claim of the year
    Covered treatment cost $1,000
    Co-insurance (you pay 20%) - $200
    SUBTOTAL $800
    Deductible - $100
    TOTAL REFUND $700

For other illness claims in the same year
    Covered treatment cost $1,000
    Co-insurance (you pay 20%) - $200
    SUBTOTAL $800
    Deductible - $0
    TOTAL REFUND $800
    Exclusions

Some conditions may not be covered by your pet insurance policy. These are called exclusions.

    Examples of exclusions include:

    • pre-existing medical conditions
    • foreseeable conditions
    • obvious symptoms
    • injuries that existed before your insurance policy purchase
    • injuries that happen after your insurance purchase but before the coverage takes effect
