Coverage

When choosing a pet insurance plan, keep in mind that 75% of pet insurance claims are for illness. You should also think about which plan is best for your pet's entire life because if you decide to change your plan later, you'll have to re-apply. That means any illnesses or injuries that already happened may have a lower limit of coverage under your new policy, or those particular conditions may be excluded from coverage altogether. Additionally, you can also avoid exclusions by insuring your pet from an early age before they develop any conditions that might not be covered.

Remember, good preventative care is important to the health of your pet, so you must make a commitment to pay for annual veterinary check-ups and all appropriate yearly vaccinations. Any other non-essential procedures like spaying and neutering, micro-chipping, teeth cleaning and more, are also your responsibility.

Plan Costs

Accident Plan coverage starts from just $9.95 per month (plus applicable taxes) for cats and $10.95 per month (plus applicable taxes) for dogs. With all plans, you will get back up to 80% of covered veterinary costs minus any applicable deductible. Choose the plan that best suits your needs:

Coverage in Canada and the U.S.

If your pet is hurt or gets sick while travelling with you anywhere in Canada and the continental U.S., PC pet insurance covers emergency veterinary treatment according to the plan you've chosen.

When does coverage start?

Insured pets must be at least 8 weeks old. Once you've purchased PC pet insurance, the following applies:

  • Accident coverage begins 48 hours from the time of purchase
  • Illness coverage begins 21 days from the time of purchase

Your premium

Your premium is the cost of your pet's insurance policy. Your premium is not affected by your pet's age but instead based on two things:

  • The breed of your pet – we cover all breeds but some breeds are prone to certain illnesses so it may cost more to insure them
  • Where you live – veterinary costs differ from place to place

Changing your coverage

Every time you change your coverage you have to re-apply. That means any illness or injuries that already happened may have lower limit of coverage under the new policy, or those particular conditions may be excluded from coverage altogether. That's why it's best to start off with the plan that will provide the appropriate coverage for your pet's entire life.

How to Make a Claim

Making a claim is simple and easy. Just follow these steps:

Step 1: Print Claim Form

Download a Claim Form and take it into the veterinarian's office.

Other forms you may need:

Step 2: Talk with your Veterinarian

Discuss the diagnosis with your veterinarian and decide on the best treatment for your pet.

Step 3: Pay Bill

Pay the veterinary bill in full and get a receipt.

Step 4: Veterinarian to complete Claim Form

Ask the veterinary to fill out their portion of the claim form and make sure you fill out the rest. Both you and your veterinarian must sign the form.

Step 5: Mail Claim Form

Make a photocopy of your receipts for your records, attach the original receipt(s) to the claim form and mail it to the following address:

Western Financial Insurance Company
Attn: Claims Dept.
200-1200 Portage Avenue
Winnipeg, MB R3G 0T5

When will you receive your claim cheque?

Your claim should be processed in 5 business days from when the insurance company receives all the necessary documents. Once that is complete, a cheque will be mailed to you for the amount of any covered claim.

Calculating Your Claim

The amount you get back is the total amount of your claim for covered costs minus co-insurance and your deductible.
Co-Insurance means you're responsible for 20% of the cost of your claim plus the applicable deductible. You'll be reimbursed for the rest.
The Deductible is the amount of your deductible depends on the age of your pet and is set when you sign up for your insurance.

  • If your pet has an accident, you pay the deductible for each claim made
  • If your pet has an illness, you pay the deductible only once a year, even if your pet gets sick again within the same year, and if you have no claims, you pay no deductible

So for example, here's how a claim would be calculated for a pet less than 5 years of age:

For each accident claim
Covered treatment cost $1,500
Co-insurance (you pay 20%) -$300
SUBTOTAL $1,200
Deductible -$100
TOTAL REFUND $1,100
For the first illness claim of the year
Covered treatment cost $1,000
Co-insurance (you pay 20%) -$200
SUBTOTAL $800
Deductible -$100
TOTAL REFUND $700
For other illness claims in the same year
Covered treatment cost $1,000
Co-insurance (you pay 20%) -$200
SUBTOTAL $800
Deductible -$0
TOTAL REFUND $800

Exclusions

Some conditions may not be covered by your pet insurance policy. These are called exclusions. Examples include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Foreseeable conditions
  • Obvious symptoms
  • Injuries that existed before your insurance policy purchase
  • Injuries that happen after your insurance purchase but before the coverage takes effect

How to avoid exclusions

  • Insure your pet from an early age and before they develop health problems that may be excluded
  • Choose the plan you'll stick with for your pet's entire life. If you decide to upgrade later you'll have to re-apply and health problems that have already happened may have a lower limit of coverage under the new policy or may be excluded from coverage altogether.
