Fireplace Safety

Print

Each year, accidents involving fireplaces are a major cause of home fires. The good news is that many fires can be prevented with proper safety precautions:

  • Install and use safety screens, and leave glass doors open when using your wood burning fireplace to avoid a chemical build-up that could lead to a chimney fire.
  • Place logs at the rear of the fireplace on a supporting grate and don't overload your fireplace.
  • Never use gas or other flammable liquids to rekindle or light a fire.
  • Don't burn any kind of trash, wrapping paper or greenery.
  • Ensure ashes are completely cooled down before you throw them out.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy and ensure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms.
  • Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney specialist.
