  • Doesn't my provincial health insurance plan cover me when I travel?

Provincial Health Plans are designed to provide coverage for medical treatment within your home province or territory of residence. Each province has a set amount of coverage for residents travelling outside of their home province. You should never rely on your GHIP to provide you with full coverage whether travelling in or outside of Canada. Before you leave on your trip we recommend that you check what coverage you have and you can do this by clicking on your province listed below.

PC® travel insurance online is available in all provinces and territories. PC Financial® Travel Insurance To Go is not available in French or to residents of Quebec or New Brunswick.

  • Do I need travel insurance for a quick cross-border trip to the U.S.?

Accidents and unexpected illnesses can happen even if you're only away for one day. With PC travel insurance you can choose the low-cost medical plan for short trips so you can enjoy your time away without worry.

  • What information is needed to calculate my premium?

Your premium will be based on your age at the time you purchase your insurance, the number of days of your trip (including your departure date and your return date) and whether you are purchasing a single or family policy. If you are purchasing a policy that includes trip cancellation you will need to provide your trip cost.

For travellers 60 years of age and older you may be required to complete a medical questionnaire depending on the product you are purchasing.

  • Do my children have to be insured separately?

As long as your children are travelling with you, you do not have to purchase a separate policy for them. If you purchase a Single Trip Medical Plan up to two children under the age of 12 who are either your dependent children or your grandchildren are covered under your policy. For the Single Trip Comprehensive Plan, up to two children under the age of 12 who are either your dependent children or your grandchildren are covered for emergency medical and emergency dental coverage. To ensure you have coverage for your children’s baggage and trip cost you must purchase a separate Trip Cancellation and Baggage Plan.

  • How can I earn PC Optimum points?

When you pay for your PC travel insurance with your President's Choice Financial® MasterCard®, you'll get 10 PC Optimum points for every dollar paid.

  • If I have an accident while travelling outside of the country, will I have to pay those enormous medical bills out of pocket?

With PC travel insurance, wherever possible, all eligible expenses will be paid on your behalf.

  • What is a pre-existing condition?

A medical condition is an injury or sickness, including but not limited to disease, acute psychoses, and complications of pregnancy occurring within the first 31 weeks.

We do not cover any loss or expense related in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, to any such condition if prior to each departure date*:

    • Your medical condition or any related condition has not been stable and controlled;
    • Your heart condition has not been stable and controlled or you have required, taken or used nitroglycerin in any form, more than once per week for the relief of angina pain; or
    • Your lung condition has not been stable and controlled or you have required the use of home oxygen or taken oral steroids (prednisone or prednisolone) for a lung condition.

*Please refer to your policy wording to determine the number of days that your medical condition is required to be stable and controlled prior to your departure date.

  • Can I still get travel insurance if I have a pre-existing condition?

Yes, you can still get travel insurance if you have a pre-existing medical condition. If your condition is not stable and controlled, as per the policy wording, that medical condition will not be covered while you are on your trip.

  • Do I have to purchase travel insurance at the same time as I book my trip?

You can purchase travel insurance right up to 24 hours prior to your departure date.

  • Will travel insurance cover my expenses if I must return home because of an emergency?

If the reason for your emergency return home is a covered risk and you have purchased either the Single Trip Comprehensive Plan or the Trip Cancellation & Baggage Insurance your expenses will be covered based on the terms and conditions of the policy wording. You may have to pay some out-of-pocket expenses which you can submit with your claim form.

  • Can I purchase travel insurance if I'm already on holiday?

No, PC travel insurance can be purchased only up to the day you leave.

  • What if I decide to extend my trip?

You must extend your travel insurance. Just remember to top up your PC travel insurance coverage before the original policy expiry date. Simply call the 24/7 customer service number. Residents of New Brunswick and Quebec, please call 1-855-627-2496. Residents of other provinces, please call 1-855-627-2496 for trips to Cuba and 1-866-283-9233 for all other destinations.
